The rod is always shorter than the closet.

Opening width = jamb to jamb, the full width of the closet cavity. Wall height = floor to the ceiling or to the underside of the shelf, whichever stops the rod. A standard 8-foot ceiling is 96″.

    What decides a closet's capacity

    The usable rod is not the opening

    Every closet loses rod to its own brackets and side returns — about six inches of it, which is a shirt or three. Then the doors take their cut. These are the numbers we publish, and the calculator interpolates between them.

    Bypass doors are the quiet thief. They cover half the opening permanently, so a 6-foot bypass closet gives you one 3-foot view at a time — the rod is full length, but the middle of it becomes archaeology.     And the drops those rods have to clear: shirts 38″, folded trousers 42″, full-length trousers 52″, long coats 54″, dresses 60–70″. Double-hanging needs about 84″ of wall — the upper rod at 80–84″, the lower at 40–42″, with a shirt's 38″ drop clearing between them. A standard 8-foot ceiling gives you that with room for a shelf above. Whether you get the second rod is the difference that doubles the closet.

    Depth, and why it is always 24 inches

    A standard coat hanger is 17–19″ wide, and a shirt on one hangs about 20″ across the shoulders. Add the rod bracket, add the door, and 24″ of depth is the smallest number that lets a garment hang square without pressing into the back wall. Anything shallower and the clothes turn to face you, which is how a closet loses a third of its capacity without changing size.

    For a walk-in the sizes are additive and unforgiving: 24″ of hanging plus a 36″ walkway is the 5 × 5 minimum, and hanging on both walls needs a full 7 feet — 24 + 36 + 24 = 84″ exactly. A 6-foot walk-in hangs on one side, whatever the plan says.

    The one estimate on this page

    Rod length, rod height, garment drop and closet depth are all figures we publish and stand behind. Garment spacing along the rod is not. Nobody publishes a standard for how many shirts fit in a linear foot — it depends on hanger thickness, fabric bulk and how hard you are willing to push. So the calculator states its assumption out loud (about 1″ per shirt, 1½″ per pair of folded trousers, 2″ per dress or coat) and marks the result an estimate.

    Questions people actually ask

    How much hanging rod do you get in a closet?

    Always less than the opening. A 3-foot closet gives about 30″ of usable rod, a 4-foot gives about 42, a 6-foot about 66 and an 8-foot about 90 — the brackets and the side returns take the difference. Bifold panels stack about 2″ deep on each side, and bypass doors permanently cover half the opening, so a 6-foot bypass closet shows you one 3-foot view at a time. That is why the middle of the rod becomes archaeology.

    How high should a closet rod be?

    A single rod carrying mixed hanging goes at 66–72″ above the floor, with a shelf about 12″ above it. For double-hanging, the upper rod goes at 80–84″ and the lower at 40–42. A long-hang rod for dresses and coats wants 68–72″, because those garments need the full drop.

    Can I double-hang my closet?

    You need about 84″ of wall to do it: the upper rod at 80–84″, the lower at 40–42, with a shirt's 38″ drop clearing between them. A standard 8-foot ceiling gives you that with room for a shelf above; the lower the ceiling, the sooner it is the second rod or the shelf. Double-hanging only works for shirts, jackets and folded trousers — anything with a drop over about 38″ has to live on a single long-hang rod.

    What is the smallest walk-in closet that works?

    5 × 5 feet, with hanging on one wall only: 24″ of hanging depth plus a 36″ walkway. Hanging on both walls needs a full 7 feet — 24 + 36 + 24 is 84″ exactly — so a 6-foot-wide walk-in hangs on one side whatever the plan says. 36″ is the walkway; below that you cannot stand and pull a drawer at the same time, and 30 is the absolute squeeze.
