TV viewing distance calculator — how far to sit from a 65, 75 or 85-inch TV, and what size TV to buy for the distance you already have. Enter either number and get the other, with the standard each figure comes from stated out loud.
Measure from the front of the sofa cushion to the face of the screen. Screen sizes are diagonals — a 65″ TV is 57″ wide. All figures here assume a 4K panel.
Almost every viewing-distance calculator on the internet gives one number and does not say where it came from. There are actually two figures, they measure different things, and neither is wrong.
For a 65″ 4K set those come out at about 4′-3″, 6′-6″ and 8′-8″ respectively. All three are true at once. Never call a sofa "too close" unless it is inside the acuity floor.
Panels are 16:9, so width is about 87% of the diagonal and height about 49%. These are the numbers to hold against the wall — and against the console underneath, which should outrun the panel rather than match it.

A 65″ panel (57″ wide) on a 58″ stand is at its limit; a 70″ stand carries it with margin. Media consoles run 58–80″ wide by 16–17″ deep, and that depth is real floor. Wall-mounting gives it back — a mounted panel projects about 3″.
The number everyone repeats is 42″ from the floor to the centre of the screen, and we publish it with a verify attached — because the published standard is an angle, not a height. CTA/CEDIA CEB23-B says no more than 15° from the seated eye to the edge of the screen. Forty-two inches is that angle worked back from a sofa seat, and it moves the instant the seating does.
The angle gives you a check you can actually run: at 15°, the top edge of the screen should sit no more than 0.27 × your seating distance above eye level. Nine feet back, that is 29 inches above your eyes — and half a 65″ panel is 16, so the centre can sit about 13 inches above eye level and no more. Above a fireplace the centre usually lands at 65–75″, well past it. Nobody publishes a figure for the over-the-fireplace case, so we do not either; it has to be checked against your real seating.
The most-cited number in home cinema is SMPTE's 30° horizontal field, from EG 18-1994. SMPTE withdrew that document on 26 March 2003, and SMPTE withdraws a document "only if there is a significant possibility of its use causing harm". It is still the source of half the viewing-distance advice on the internet, quoted by people who have never looked it up.
So this calculator cites ITU-R BT.2022 for the acuity floor, which is current, and THX for the immersion target, which is a convention we label as one. That is the whole difference between a number and a sourced number. Full write-up: TV size & viewing distance.
Between about 6′-6″ and 8′-8″ — that is 1.2 to 1.6 × the 65″ diagonal, which is the band our TV guide publishes. The near end of it is THX's immersion target, where the screen fills roughly 40° of your field of view. You can sit closer than that without seeing pixels: the acuity floor for a 4K 65″ set is around 4′-3″, from ITU-R BT.2022. Between 4 feet and 6½ you are simply choosing how much of your vision the picture occupies.
Measure from the front of the sofa to the TV wall, then divide by 1.4 and you have the diagonal the room wants. An 8-foot gap says 65–70″; an 85″ set wants nine feet and change. If the sofa cannot move back, the TV size was never really your decision — the room picked it.
About 57″ wide and 32″ tall. TV sizes are diagonals, which is the one number that tells you nothing about the wall: panels are 16:9, so width is roughly 87% of the diagonal and height about 49%. A 77-inch TV is 68 inches wide. Bezels add fractions of an inch, no more.

Yes, but much closer than people think. The limit is the acuity floor — the distance at which the pixel structure starts to resolve — and for 4K that is about 1.5–1.6 × the picture height, which is roughly 0.78 × the diagonal. For a 65″ set that is around 4 feet. Inside it you begin to see the grid; outside it, sitting closer only makes the picture bigger, not worse.

Usually, and nobody publishes a figure for it. Above a fireplace the screen centre normally lands at 65–75″ off the floor, which exceeds the 15° guidance from a sofa. It has to be checked against your actual seating rather than against a rule of thumb — which is exactly the kind of thing a floor plan settles in ten seconds.
