What size dining room do I need? Enter a table and get the clear floor it wants once every chair pulls back 36 inches — or enter a room and get the largest table we publish that fits in it. The walk-behind and the sideboard are counted, and every figure names which side it applies to. Rooms in feet, tables in inches.
Clearance is measured from the table edge to the wall or the next piece. 36″ is the chair's own travel; 42–48 is what a route behind a seated diner wants. Extension tables have two states — check both.
The single most skipped number in furnishing a house is the distance a dining chair travels backwards. It is 36 inches from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture, and it is not comfort — it is the room an adult needs to get their legs clear of the table and stand up.
Apply it to all four sides and the arithmetic is brutal. A 72 × 36 table is six square feet of tabletop and it commissions 144 × 108 inches of floor — twelve feet by nine, or 108 square feet — before a sideboard, a doorway or a radiator has said anything. The table is roughly a sixth of the room it needs.
This is worth separating properly, because people apply the bigger number to all four sides and conclude they need a ballroom.
36 inches is the chair's travel. It assumes the person pulling the chair out is the person who was sitting in it, and that once they are up they walk away from the table rather than along it. Every side of every dining table needs this much, without exception.
42 to 48 inches is a route. It only applies to the sides a path actually crosses — the way through to the kitchen, the run in front of the sideboard people serve from. The extra six to twelve inches is somebody edging past the back of an occupied chair while dinner is happening. Most dining rooms need it on one side, occasionally two, and almost never on all four.
The calculator applies whichever you choose to every side, because that is the conservative reading and it keeps the arithmetic honest. If only one side is a route, run it at 36 and add the difference to that one dimension yourself: the jump from 36 to 42 costs six inches on one side, and from 36 to 48 costs twelve.
Seat counts come from 24 inches of table edge per diner — elbows included — which is the figure the design standards have used for decades. The widely repeated "30 inches per person" is folklore, and applied to overall width it undercounts every table there is.

Notice what the third column does: the short dimension barely moves. Going from a four-seat table to a twelve-seat one costs you six feet of length and ten inches of width, because the pull-back on the long sides is the same 36 either way. Dining rooms are long, and that is why.

Round tables seat more per square foot of table and need more room around them, because every chair pulls back along a radius and the clearance is a ring rather than four strips. A 60-inch round seats six to eight where a 72 × 36 rectangle seats six — and it wants an 11-foot square room against the rectangle's 12 by 9.
Which wins depends on the shape of the room you have, not on preference. Rectangles win in narrow rooms and against a wall. Rounds win for conversation, and they leave the corners of a square room open — which is often where the sideboard and the Christmas tree actually go.
A typical sideboard or buffet is 60 × 18 inches, and it wants 30 inches of working room in front of it — enough to open a drawer and stand there with a serving dish. Read carelessly, that is 48 inches of the room gone.
It is not, and the reason is overlap. The sideboard faces the table, which means its 30 inches of working room lands inside the chair pull-back zone that is already 36 inches deep. 36 is more than 30, so the working room is absorbed and the sideboard costs you only its own 18 inches of depth. The calculator adds exactly that when you turn it on, and it says so.
The one case where it is not free: a sideboard on a side that is also a route. Then you want the pull-back at the walk-behind figure anyway, and the sideboard depth comes off that. Choose the 42 or the 48 above and the arithmetic follows you.

The 24-inch figure has independent corroboration worth knowing about: the IBC puts a seated diner's envelope at 19 inches from the table edge, and the NKBA — working entirely separately — arrives at 32 inches from table edge to an obstruction with no traffic. Nineteen plus a 12-inch accessway is 31. Two unrelated authorities landing within an inch of each other is the strongest evidence in the whole set.
What this page cannot do is see the doorway. A dining room is usually a through-room, and where the route enters and leaves decides which side needs the walk-behind and which does not. That is the question a plan answers and a calculator cannot.
Add 36″ of chair pull-back to every side of the table. A 72 × 36 table therefore wants a clear 144 × 108″ — twelve feet by nine — before anything else lives in the room. A 60-inch round wants a circle 132″ across, so an 11-foot room. If a walkway has to pass behind the seated chairs, add another 6–12″ on that side.
36″ from the table edge to the nearest wall or piece of furniture. That is chair pull-back — enough to sit down and stand up again. Where a path runs behind seated diners, widen it to 42–48. A sideboard needs 30″ of working room in front of it, and it is usually facing the pull-back zone already, so the two overlap and it costs you only its own depth.
144 × 120″, less 36″ of pull-back on all four sides, leaves a table footprint of 72 × 48. The largest rectangle we publish that fits inside that is the 72 × 36, which seats six with three a side and nobody at the ends. Round, the same room takes a 48-inch table, which seats four comfortably. If you can accept the walk-behind dropping to plain pull-back on every side, that is already what this assumes.
For pulling the chair out and standing up, yes — that is exactly what the 36 is for. It is not enough for somebody to walk past behind a seated diner, which is why the walk-behind figure is 42–48. The two are different jobs: 36 is the chair's travel, and the extra 6–12 is the person edging past it. Only the sides a route actually crosses need the bigger number.
More room around it, yes, and less table for the same number of seats. Every chair at a round table pulls back along a radius, so the clearance is a ring rather than four strips — a 60-inch round wants a clear circle 132″ across. In exchange it seats six to eight where a 72 × 36 rectangle seats six. Rectangles win in narrow rooms and against a wall; rounds win for conversation and leave the corners of a square room open.
Its own depth, and usually nothing more. A typical sideboard is 60 × 18″ and wants 30″ of working room in front of it — but it faces the chair pull-back zone, which is already 36″ deep, so the two overlap and the 30 is absorbed. That means an 18″ sideboard against one wall adds 18″ to that dimension of the room, not 48. It is the one piece of dining-room arithmetic that is cheaper than it looks.
